"In case you haven't recognized the trend: it proceeds action, dissent, speech." ~ davidly, on how wars get done

"...What sort of meager, unerotic existence must a man live to find himself moved to such ecstatic heights by the mundane sniping of a congressional budget fight. The fate of human existence does not hang in the balance. The gods are not arrayed on either side. Poseiden, earth-shaker, has regrettably set his sights on the poor fishermen of northern Japan and not on Washington, D.C. where his ire might do some good--I can think of no better spot for a little wetland reclamation project, if you know what I mean. The fight is neither revolution nor apocalypse; it is hardly even a fight. A lot of apparatchiks are moving a lot of phony numbers with more zeros than a century of soccer scores around, weaving a brittle chrysalis around a gross worm that, some time hence, will emerge, untransformed, still a worm." ~ IOZ

Over Night

So this is what's been demonstrated. A city can be militarized over night. Not metaphorically over night. Literally. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

It is not only the fact that it was done, but the fact that it was done willingly.

Scare the people enough and a city center with a population of upwards of 600k will abondon the streets and turn it over to a militarized presence in a heartbeat.

Of course it was willingly. Learning to stand in a line single-file in kindergarten is just the start of the lifelong exercise.

Yep. But probably no more than one at a time (and surgically) before Texas and the Ted Nugent brigade realize what's going on, blame it on Obama, and break out the ordnance. In fact, I suspect they're already onto that now that things have died down.

Also, too, probably vastly unsustainable over any length of time without the imposition of true Empire terror (which this was not). Limited gubmint and all that.

Remember who won the latest skirmish in Congress. And why.

Jim,
What would be Nugent's chances if the state wanted to militarize his ranch? How many liberals would be calling him a traitor as he was utterly destroyed?

Regardless, I think you underestimate the degree to which the people are willing to cooperate.

The fear of the other is powerful in its ability to marshall seemingly opposite factions of our body politic under the guise of "preventing terrorism".

@d.mantis: I beg to differ about my misunderestimations. If you seek out my crappy little corner of the 'Nets and run down the label "Swarm" (22 entries) or "Crowds and Power" you'll catch my full-bodied analysis of the phenomenon. Much of it a look at Elias Canetti's book on same.

Sorry, Jack, to self-promote in your space. I just thought the question from d.mantis deserved a fuller answer than I could put in a little Comment box.
