Anthony Weiner's been a dick for a very long time. The kind of dick who racebaits his way into power. The kind of putzy shmok who does the usual New Yorker cover for all things dirty, underhanded and evil yon Eretz Yisroel way. He's been a keen supporter of foreign occupations and wars, for as long as he's been a Congressman.
1. He played on white and Jewish fears of black people, in order to get elected. He used a particularly nasty episode in late New York history - the Crown Heights riots - to do so.
2. He's been a consistent supporter of the shitty little colonial garrison race state for as long as he's been in politics.
3. He thinks women - women he's never met, even - best serve his needs and purposes as unpaid dick voyeurs.
4. He married a well connected, independent woman in her prime - and then turned his unsolicited attentions to young, poor and single women who lacked the means to effectively stop him without first turning to powerful outsiders for assistance.
Maybe he was far more "progressive" than many of his counterparts.
Didn't stop him from being a dick, now, did it?

"...What sort of meager, unerotic existence must a man live to find himself moved to such ecstatic heights by the mundane sniping of a congressional budget fight. The fate of human existence does not hang in the balance. The gods are not arrayed on either side. Poseiden, earth-shaker, has regrettably set his sights on the poor fishermen of northern Japan and not on Washington, D.C. where his ire might do some good--I can think of no better spot for a little wetland reclamation project, if you know what I mean. The fight is neither revolution nor apocalypse; it is hardly even a fight. A lot of apparatchiks are moving a lot of phony numbers with more zeros than a century of soccer scores around, weaving a brittle chrysalis around a gross worm that, some time hence, will emerge, untransformed, still a worm." ~ IOZ

And Jon Stewart's buddies with this guy. Shit.
I think Stewart is best understood as a gatekeeper, JM.
Isn't Jon Stewart buddy with pretty much everyone?
Yeah. He was running cover for McCain until he had to quit it out of fear of unfunnying his entire outfit.
But, in years future perfect, he'll probably be remembered as the guy who was marginally better than Michael Rispoli in Death to Smoochy, but who managed to launch the careers of a half a dozen members of the $20 million club.
Jon Stewart is best understood as a marketing tool, used to rebrand crusty old imperialists and war criminals for hip young twenty-somethings. Look back on he interviews and it's really pretty amazing - you can see him chuckling with Barack Obama, John McCain, Henry Kissinger, Pervez Musharraf (back when "we" liked him) - interspersed with the likes of Ben Stiller and Ed Helms. He's probably done more to make empire respectable among young Americans than any other single media figure.
That's a solid improvement upon my gatekeeper comment, Christopher.
But, hey man, he really made Cramer look like a clown.
It was a perfectly timed deconstruction of embarrassing exuberance. Alike to shooting the court jester so the king can go on kinging...
Jon Stewart, Tony Weiner, Keith Olbermann... all cut from the same cloth: ubernerd kids who are getting nerd revenge now.
They're just doing what works for Israel... latent, seething, overblown fears being used for "revenge" against all the "cool kids" who mocked them as youth.
I'd like to see them survive in a world or setting where "personality" wasn't an income source. Like in a revolution, or a war theatre.
Or in a post-apocalyptic hell zone devoid of Cultural Marketing.
They'd revert instantly to the wheezing little tykes they were, and still are inside.
Gotta love this comments box - thank you all for reminding me why Jon Stewart's a smug, unfunny doosh.
Stewart's been critical of Israel lately:

Just sayin
JM, you have the most interesting way of seeing a single dying sapling and calling it an old-growth forest.
Laughing my friggin brown ass off at Karl's assessment, I bow to your prowess sir. When the comments hit ya as much as the piece..its a good day.
Stewart lobbed nothing but softballs at Rumsfeld when that old fuck was out pushing his book. That old broad on MSNBC, Andrea-whats-her-name grilled the hell outta Rummy compared to Stewart.
If you are unhappy w/my comment blame BBBB, he has the link up at his place to yours.
Andrea Mitchell?
She's what the ancient common law called a common scold.
In the lingo of my early youth watching cartoons from the 50s and 60s, she's a "sourpuss." And as a Donkeybot, she is dutybound to hate Rumsfeld.
Stewart, on the other hand, is an entertainer who knows he's entertaining.
Ms Mitchell is grave and serious.
Just like her role model, BabaWawa.
Dusty, I'm happy with all comments. Vanity has its perks.
My take is that you don't get the prime time to late night gigs unless you're willing to be a gatekeeper.
Whether you sit at a desk provided by Comedy Central or MSNBC, you aren't going to go off the reservation and keep your job.
Well I ain't shitting about Andrea Mitchell, take it or leave it..that bitch did a better job of grilling Rummy than anyone and I watched most of them. I got lots of time..just had five discs replaced w/metal that will now set off all those fucking detectors at the airports.
I get Stewart now. I didn't used to, I thought he was something he wasn't,namely, a funny left of center political talking head.
My take is that you don't get the prime time to late night gigs unless you're willing to be a gatekeeper. I would tend to agree w/you. I am watching a helluva lot more baseball and the second season of the NBA lately. If I watch any appreciable amt of political shows I have to be medicated on the best medicinal cannabis Cali's dispensaries sell. It's beginning to be a must for me.
Isn't Jon Stewart Charlie Rose's illegitimate son?
After all, they smooze the same people on their shows.
Oh and screw Barbie Walters. Andrea might tow the D line, but I loved watching Rummy squirm when she peppered him w/questions. She was politely rabid on his ass.
"And as a Donkeybot, she is dutybound to hate Rumsfeld."
What's there to like about Rumsfeld? I think even hardcore right wingers are sick of most of Bush's administration, like how lefties and others are sick of Obama already.
JM, that misperception streak is intact.
I wasn't admiring or supporting Rumsfeld. I was observing Andrea Mitchell's slant/perspective.
For someone who spends a lot of time following me around and commenting on my comments, you sure do miss the mark an extraordinarily large part of the time you comment about me or my thoughts. How does someone rate at such a deficient level of comprehension? I have to think it's intentional. To what end? I don't see the snark, satire, sarcasm or scathe. I see only... concern trolling.
NB: If you invert your present take on my commentary, JM, you'll be a lot closer to accurate.
By calling Mitchell a "common scold" I was remarking on how she's perceived by the World of Viewers in a global comparison to other News Presenters of the Female Gender. She's the closest thing TV journos have to a Helen Thomas.
For decades Helen Thomas was often the lone gadfly in a White House press briefing, and within the WH press corps and WH press office staff she was thought to be a problem, an annoyance, and almost a joke. Why? Because she didn't overtly buy the in-power party line.
Andrea Mitchell has the luxury of talking to Rummy when Rummy is formally out-of-power. Rummy hasn't held a US Govt office for several years. It's a lot easier to go for a capillary or two, to draw a bit of red mist, when the target isn't sitting in Fed Power.
For his own turn, Rummy has nothing to lose, image/ego wise, by letting Mitchell throw a few barbs at him. He's a millionaire many times over, thanks to his revolving door of pvt sector --> fed office --> pvt sector --> fed office. To let Mitchell sting a few times is like "suffering" a mosquito bite on a humid summer's twilight.
Karl, such prose dear man! To let Mitchell sting a few times is like "suffering" a mosquito bite on a humid summer's twilight. He was stammering and stuttering like someones little bitch..I merely enjoyed seeing him in that position. Can you blame me?
True, no harm no foul..but it was entertaining nonetheless.
Isn't Jon Stewart Charlie Rose's illegitimate son?
This isn't your father's Buick! He's young! He's hip! And no Henry Kissinger!
